**Working with layers**

Layers are the fundamental building block for image manipulation. Photoshop enables you to add layers to organize and edit your images. When you click the New Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers panel, you see the New Layer dialog box (Figure 6-1).

You can use the following tools to create layers:

* **Layer tools:** Use the Pencil, Brush, and Polygon tools to draw and paint on the canvas, creating a layer. (See Chapter 5 for instructions on using these tools.)
* **Filters:** Apply filters to create and manipulate the look and appearance of images, without altering their actual content. Filters add several types of visual effects to the layer you apply them to:

* **Blur:** Refracts light rays and distorts images to make them look like they’ve been blurred. You can apply either a Gaussian or Motion blur effect. Gaussian blur gradually softens shadows, while Motion blur gradually softens highlights.

* **Color:** Colors are often lost when an image is black-and-white converted to grayscale. A color version of a grayscale image can improve the look of a black-and-white image by restoring color.

* **Gamma:** Enhances the overall contrast of an image (images with higher contrast look brighter than those with lower contrast).

* **Sketch:** Draws freehand using a brush (or by tracing the edge of an object with the Pen tool).

* **Saturation:** Enhances the saturation of colors in an image; adds or subtracts color; and adjusts colors’ saturation, or the purity of colors. Some common uses of this filter are to brighten colors, desaturate colors, or to change colors’ hue.

* **Vibrance:** Increases or decreases the saturation of colors. You can use this filter to add or subtract color saturation.

You can access a menu of specific filters from the Filter drop-down list in the Layers panel or by choosing Filter⇒Other Filters⇒Adjustment⇒Adjustment Menu.

Exploring the boundaries of molecular materials, both in the laboratory and in the natural world, lies at the heart of the biomimetic chemistry community. To date, researchers have largely focused on the properties of molecular machinery contained within organisms. However, a large gap remains between understanding the basic principles that govern molecular reaction mechanisms, and constructing molecular devices that act in a predictably controlled manner. The problem is particularly acute when attempting to construct molecular-scale components that can operate in a fluid and dynamic environment, such as liquid droplets and on interfaces.

Pioneering studies by Stephen Bartlett and colleagues demonstrated that interfacial motion can be harnessed for microfluidic applications, such as the operation of chemical reactors and the transport of DNA and proteins[@b1][@b2]. Another landmark study by the Bartlett group reported the creation of molecular valves that can perform selective and asymmetric molecular reactions[@b3]. The emergence of such functional molecular systems from the bottom-up design of supramolecular complexes is an exciting prospect in the emerging field of Molecular Robotics[@b4]. A fundamental requirement for any such design is the ability to program the assembly of molecular structures in a well-defined manner. This can be achieved by exploiting the discrete nature of individual supramolecular components, either through the design of the constituent components, or through self-assembly from solution[@b5].

The development of self-assembling materials and the design of molecular templates opens up the exciting prospect of incorporating tailored motifs and functionalities into complex patterns and assemblies with hitherto unprecedented complexity. It is also a means of exploring the behaviour and properties of supramolecular assemblies that have not been possible to access due to limitations in size and complexity. Here, the current challenges and future potential of this exciting field are highlighted.
