1. **Open a new document in Photoshop**.

It’s best to start small. A 6″ x 6″ image is usually sufficient, although don’t limit yourself to it. Create a new document that’s a little larger. For example, start with a 7″ x 9″ image.

2. **Select the Rectangular Marquee tool and then click and drag from one corner of the image to the opposite corner to create a selection outline. Then choose Edit** → **Select** → **None**.

You can see the selection in the Layers palette (Figure 10-10).

3. **Click the Add Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers palette**.

This adds an empty layer to the layer stack.

4. **Click inside the Layers palette window**.

The palette’s contents appear in the Preview window. You see the blank layer in the lower-left corner of the image, which is marked with a black-and-white rectangle with a down arrow.

5. **Close the Layers palette. Now you need to add a layer mask**.

Figure 10-10: Use the Selection tools to draw a selection outline that’ll help you create an editable selection.

Drag a new layer mask from the Layers palette to the new layer in the Layers palette. You see the new mask in the preview window (Figure 10-11).

Figure 10-11: Use the new mask to paint over the selection outline.

6. **With the Marquee tool, click and drag inside the mask to select the area that you want to mask**.

The mask is black where you clicked the canvas to define the selection. Anything that is _not_ selected is white.

7. **With the Move tool, drag the selection outline to be smaller**.

Move the selection outline by dragging it to the left or right of the image until it’s the size you want, as shown in Figure 10-12. Remember that this will make the rest of the image appear transparent; use the Transparency check box in the Layers palette to change that.

Figure 10-12: Drag the Selection outline to the right or left of the image to control the transparency.

8. **Choose the Colorize button from the Image menu, shown inFigure 10-13.**

Audrey Hepburn

She did it to herself

Our beloved Princess of the 1960s found that her life had turned sour. She had become caught up in a dangerous mix of pain pills and unrequited love.

During the filming of The Nun’s Story in 1955, Audrey Hepburn suffered a minor fall during a horseback ride. The horse was never identified in the movie, but in truth the accident was caused by her personal demons.

While photographing for Vogue, Hepburn fell out of a convertible car and injured her leg. As she got out of the car, her dress snagged on the door. She realized that there was a long rip in her high-heeled dress and hastened to take it off. She fell to the ground, injuring her knee.

As Audrey was recuperating, her love life was becoming more problematic. She had been married briefly to Mel Ferrer and was dating Peter O’Toole when she met Cuban-born businessman Mel Ferrer.

And to top it all off, she had fallen in love with another man—played by Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday.

The combination of these factors led to a tumultuous life. In an interview with Charlie Rose in 2013, Hepburn revealed that she was taking a cocktail of five different pills for her pain at this time. She told Rose, “I think a lot of my unhappiness was hormones, my glands. I was unhappy. It wasn’t so much that I was unhappy with my husband [O’Toole]. I didn’t think I was unhappy with him at all. It was with my ex-husband [Ferrer].”

In an interview with Charles Higham in 1961, Hepburn said that Ferrer was “very insecure, very insecure, he felt he wanted to make a great success of me, and he wanted to be loved, and when I had a relationship with someone other than him he didn’t think that that was right.” (GQ, March 2014)

1. Next, you need a couple of images. You can just use two images for this tutorial, but it’s more fun with more.

2. Select one of your images, using the Rectangle Selection Tool.

3. Now, select one of the images you want to use as the base (the one you want to work on). Make sure that the Clone Stamp option is off. If it’s on, all your changes will be applied to the original image.

4. Next, resize your base image so that it’s exactly the same size as the other one.

5. Now, select the Brush tool and open the Brush Presets menu.

6. Click the Options button in the Brush window, select the Brush Style drop-down menu, and choose “Brush Size: 100%.”

7. At the bottom of the Brush Presets menu, click the Brush Tool icon and select Brush 1.

8. Now, use the Rectangular Selection Tool to select the portion of the image you want to work on.

9. On the right side of the Brush Tool window, click the tool icon to set the size of the brush tip to a size of 100%.

10. With this brush, you’re going to paint the image. Repeat this process on the second image you want to work on.

11. When you’re finished, click the “DONE” button. When you’ve finished, both images should look similar. If one looks a bit more colorful, that’s because the image on the right was selected before the one on the left.

12. Save your images. Name the images any way you like, such
